STUDENT PASSWORDS AND “CHECK YOUR TECH”

Student passwords are now available in Focus SIS for select individuals to view. The “BCPS Password” field, found on the General Tab, displays the current BCPS password for a student or Unknown if the student password was reset. Student passwords will be visible to teachers for their assigned students, to school administrators, school counselors, and clerical staff. As the school year begins, each school will need to determine how to distribute passwords to students when necessary. Principals are encouraged to explore the best practice that will work for their community; however, it is NOT best practice to print lists of usernames and passwords for groups of students.

Through other communication, students have been reminded to remember their password over the summer. In the case that the student has forgotten the password and it is unknown in Focus, the student should contact the Help Desk or submit a BCPS Technology Support Request ticket to obtain a new password. School staff do not have the ability to reset student passwords.

In addition to information about passwords, schools should also communicate with students the need to “Check Your Tech”. Staff and students should take the opportunity prior to the start of the year to ensure that both their device and their password are working properly. Schools are encouraged to use the following draft communication for their communities (feel free to amend for your school’s Web site or other communication):

As the 2022-2023 school year approaches, it’s time to make sure your technology is in good working order! Please call the help desk at 443-809-4672 or enter a ticket to report an issue with your device or your password as soon as possible. Issues to report include damage, won’t start up, missing charger, etc. These issues could also include a forgotten or non-working BCPS password. The start of the school year is a very busy time for the BCPS Tech Support Team and there may be significant delays if you wait to request help or report an issue. Act now if you need tech support so the start of the new school year can be a smooth one technologically!

This or a similar communication should be shared with students through Web site or other communication channels and during early entry days for students. A form of this communication will also appear on the BCPS Web site.
